Some tips for seeing auroras at Dunnet Head

Points provided by the owner of the Dunnet Head bed and breakfast who is a radio amateur and electronics engineer.  Radio amateurs are more aware of auroral activity because they can bounce signals off the auroras even though they may not be visible to the naked eye.

  • There must be a cloudless sky
  • Can only be seen in the winter between October and April
  • It must be a moonless night
  • The sun has to be active - lots of sun spots
  • Interplanetary magnetic field must be suitably aligned or the aurora cannot be seen
